Thoughts in Flanders Field

I wrote this poem after watching the Remembrance Day programmes commemorating the 90th, anniversary of the Armistice in 1918.

A terrible peace filled with
Grey stone slabs
Like serried ranks of nameless dead.
Who are these sentries who guard our peace,
Won at such cost?
We know no names,
But,owing them all,
Fail to pay their price.
